Before We Were Yours // book review
This book was one that I felt within the first few chapters you knew exactly where things were headed. Did it make it any less good? Not at all. Were there still some twists and unexpected things that happened? Yes! Did I still cry? Yeppppp.
Little Rill Foss and her 4 younger siblings living a humble poor life on the Mississippi - ultimately ending up in an orphanage, but not in ways you’d expect….essentially entirely kidnapped. This story has layers that’ll rock you to your core.
When you’ve finished reading this book and given yourself adequate time to become 100% emotionally attached to these sweet characters - Google research the orphanage and the lady who ran it back during this time period. You’ll be disgusted. This book might be fiction, historical fiction I suppose, but the Memphis Tennessee Children’s Home Society and the awful woman who ran it - true, all true.
That said, could this book really be real? Could these characters have existed? Absolutely.
Completely engulfing, sad, uplifting, makes you want to fight for people you don’t know/who don’t exist. Beautifully written.
I definitely recommend!
