Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine // book review
I wanted to like this book — I thought I would like this book — everyone else seems to like this book.
Admittedly, I didn’t love this book. I honestly, didn’t even LIKE it a big part of the time. And my reasons why center wholly around our main character — Eleanor Oliphant. It’s entirely possible I took this book too seriously, having come off a set of serious, gut-wrenching books, I picked this up for something “light and fluffy” and then spent the majority of my time reading it being annoyed. Oliphant is, was, whatever, — in my opinion, incredibly annoying. Like, so so annoying. More than once I asked out loud to myself “WHAT IS THIS GIRLS PROBLEM!!!???”
In time, someone dear to me presented me with the perspective of — “Eventually you’ll find out why the character, Eleanor, behaves like she does, and in the meantime, I think you have to take it as surface level humor, not serious.”
That helped some, admittedly. I tried to approach the remainder of the book with the mindset of “Dang this girl has problems, but maybe she’s funny.” — instead of like, “What is this girls problem.” — and in time, I did, like you will too, find out what her problem was and why she has this problem, and the story behind it all. Perhaps if the author had STARTED the book with the backstory of our main character, maybe that would’ve been better. But alas, that is not how the story of Eleanor Oliphant went.
Overall, I didn’t love this. and I don’t necessarily recommend it.
