Where The Crawdads Sing // book review

Holy crap. I heard this was good. I heard many people saying many good things about this story. I saw an interview with the author on the Sunday Morning show several months before I read it (and loved her) and sooo many people said I should read this. I could keep going here, but where I’m going with this is that I had no idea I was going to love this book as much as I freakin did.

Owens’ writing style is one thing and deserves it’s on paragraph here — it’s absolutely delicious, if a writing style can be delicious that is. So well told, so well worded — you get sucked in almost immediately and everything feels like you are watching each scene unfold like a movie in your mind. That said, I DO have to point out, that for me, there were times when the detail got a little too much… for my preference! Some stuff, some scenes, were just “overly painted” if that makes sense. Typically I LOVE a lot of details, and I want the full story, leave nothing out — but there’s obviously a fine line between good details, and just not knowing when to stop. Some sections of this book were bits where in my opinion, Owens didn’t know when to stop, and I would’ve enjoyed it even more had she nipped and tucked some details.

You begin rooting for the main character immediately, the life of the little “marsh girl”…. Kya. From childhood though adulthood, chances are, you’ll be 100% on her side. Also, without giving much away, if you love true crime, or any good crime series/book/movie/show — you’ll love this book for that reason too, and that was a part I didn’t see coming. By the time that this story gets to that point, I was literally arguing with the lawyers and police.

The connection to Mother Nature in this book is fiercely strong, and that was another big reason why I loved it so, so much. The easily forgotten peace and joy that can be found in the solitude of just being outside, alone, and letting the world show you what it thinks you need to see. More often than not, it is exactly what you needed to see.

Overall the book has it all — a great story line, likable and also hated characters, love, crime, heartache as well as heartbreak, it keeps you guessing and keeps you wanting so much more.
